Player of the Match: Eoin Morgan 47*(40)
Match no.21 of IPL 2021, and we have witnessed another low-scoring encounter between Punjab Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders.
Captain Eoin Morgan and Rahul Tripathi guide KKR to hitch their 4-match losing streak and move to the 5th position from the bottom of the points table.
Nothing went suitable for Punjab in this game, except few crucial contributions from Mayank Agarwal 31(34) and Chris Jordan; at the end, their batting lineup disappointed everyone.
Though they pretty much impressed with the ball in the beginning, that of no use as they were already out of the contention of winning this game,
What went wrong for Punjab?
Punjab was invited to bat first, and they came with their regular openers Mayank and Rahul. They have a beautiful record batting together and continued to repeat it so. They got a good start with several big shots in the mandatory powerplay.
Despite getting the decent start, KL Rahul threw away his wicket to Pat Cummins in the last over of the powerplay. The next over saw the dismissal of “ Universe Boss” Chris Gayle on a golden duck, courtesy brilliant strike from ShivamMavi.
Later Deepak Hooda was also taken by Prasidh Krishna in the 8th over. Punjab Kings were in serious trouble because of the successive fall of wickets, and their score was 56-3 after 10 overs.
Mayank’s cautious innings came to an end.
With the increasing pressure of the run rate, Mayank was trapped by Sunil Narine in the 12th over of the innings. After Mayank’s breakthrough Nicholas Pooran and Shahrukh Khan also made their way to the pavilion.
Thanks to some big hits by Chris Jordan 30(18) that helped Punjab cross the 120 run mark.
Brilliant bowling performance by Kolkata as each of their bowlers were economical and got them wickets as well.
Was 124 runs target enough for Punjab to defend?
The answer is Yes; initially, they made Kolkata admit that it would not be that easy to reach this score at the start of the game.
Punjab was successful in getting early wickets in the form of Shubhman Gill 9(8), Nitish Rana 0(1), and Sunil Narine 0(4) in the first three overs of the game.
Kolkata’s score was 17-3 by the end of the three overs, and at the point of the match captain, Eoin Morgan came on the crease to bat.
The Rahul- Morgan partnership
Despite these early wickets, Kolkata looked very comfortable that they could reach the target, just a good partnership, and the match is over.
Exactly as they thought it happened, Rahul Tripathi and Eoin Morgan exhibited great gameplay and carried KKR’s run-scoring. Rahul having a great season with the bat, continued to show his class with balanced cricketing shots.
Eoin Morgan was playing an anchor’s role by just taking KKR to the target with much aggression. KKR reached the score of 76-3 after 10 overs, and both posted 50+ partnerships in the middle.
Hooda dismissed Rahul in the 11th over at 41(32), but KKR was in a strong position. Andre Russell was also run out in the 15th over by Arshdeep Singh, but it was too late for Punjab.
In the end, Dinesh Karthik 12(6), with his short cameo, completed the remaining job, and Eoin Morgan remained not out 47(40) took victory over Punjab by 5 wickets.
KKR team will be happy with their comeback and will try to continue this performance ahead. Punjab will surely have to fill those loopholes in their game and strengthen their batting order and bowling to turn the tables.
That’s all for this match; stay tuned with us for regular match updates!!
