Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced the Indian squads (ODIs, T20Is and Tests) for the upcoming West Indies series.

Story of the Test squad

The wait for seeing the new face of Indian cricket finally came to an end on Sunday with MSK Prasad reading out names of the players who they believe will take the future of Indian cricket forward with West indies tour being first insight. All of it begins on 3rd August in Florida.Story of the test squad

Tests: Virat Kohli (Captain), Ajinkya Rahane (VC), Mayank Agarwal, KL Rahul, C Pujara, Hanuma Vihari, Rohit Sharma, Rishabh Pant (WK) Wriddhiman Saha (WK), R Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav, Ishant Sharma, Mohammed Shami, Jasprit Bumrah, Umesh Yadav.

1. The Openers

One look at the test squad and the screams of Shikhar Dhawan being dropped shoots right up in consideration, while his counterpart Rohit Sharma is all set to solidify the batting lineup in the Test.

The opening pair will likely be Mayank Agarwal and K.L. Rahul which seems quite soft and highly unlike the ODI pair, clearly one of the formidable opening pairs in the world cricket.

At 3 we have Virat Kohli beyond any speck of doubt, while the middle order has the like of Rahane, Rohit, Pujara at 4 to soak up the pressure if the wicket falls upfront. Then there is Ravindra Jadeja who can be the game-changer in all the three departments.

2. Wicket Keepers

Wriddhiman Saha is back in the Test squad after more than a year. Also, Risabh Pant is in the squad so wicket keeping options are in good stead.

Saha last played in the Test against South Africa in Cape Town in January 2018.  Post which, he was ruled out with a shoulder injury, and later he underwent surgery last August.

3. The Bowling department

In the bowling department, India has a good pool of pacers with Jasprit Bumrah, Shami, Umesh, and Ishant. Men in Blue also has variety in spin attack to exploit the slow pitches of the West Indies with the inclusion of Kuldeep Yadav, Ashwin, and Jadeja.

Two Test matches will be a part of the ICC World Test Championship, and hence the inclusion of players like Bumrah makes complete justification. Absence of Bhuvneshwar in the squad might raise some eyebrows, but the fact of the matter is that Bhuvi is not at 100% fitness, and Chahal was unlikely to be picked.

4. No split captaincy and no rest

Virat Kohli will lead the team in all three formats. So, the question of any split captaincy is out of the equation. According to an initial report, Kohli was supposed to take rest for the limited-overs series but later Kohli himself decided to play all three series in the West Indies.

Kohli will have his task cut out against the West Indies as they are a team which cannot be taken lightly. Also, with this test, the cycle of the world test championship begins. Also, with a relatively inexperienced opening pair, he has to do the bulk of the scoring with Pujara.
