Shikhar Dhawan Ruled Out Of World Cup 2019, Rishabh Pant Added As Replacement

On Wednesday, Indian left-handed opener Shikhar Dhawan was ruled out from rest of the ongoing cricket World Cup as he wouldn’t be able to recover in time from his thumb fracture injury. Young Indian wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant is brought in as a replacement.

After Dhawan sustained thumb injury in the left hand during the game against Australia on 9th June, team management came out with a statement, that they were hoping that he would recover soon. He was initially set to miss at least three games against Pakistan(16th June), Afghanistan(22nd June) & West Indies(27th June).

Earlier today, in the press conference, Mr Sunil Subramanium said that  "Shikhar Dhawan has fractured the base of the metacarpal bone of his left hand." He further stated that "Dhawan's which rules him out of the ICC World Cup 2019, He further stated that "Dhawan's hand will remain in a cast till mid-July, which rules him out of the ICC 2019 World Cup. We have written to the ICC requesting Rishabh Pant as a replacement."

Shikhar Dhawan also posted a video on the social media thanking fans for their prayers. He also stated that the thumb injury would not recover in time. Further, he expressed his interest to play for the nation. Watch the full video below.

Though Rishabh Pant lacks ODI experience, experts count on him to be the trump card for Indian batting lineup, due to his fearless batting approach. Initially, the selectors kept him in the list of standby.

The team management was hoping for Dhawan to recover for the match against England on 30th June in Birmingham, but the in-form opener has no chance of recovering in time to play the rest of the tournament.

Earlier, the absence of Rishabh Pant name in the World Cup squad created quite a buzz in the cricketing circle, but he has got a place in the squad. Probably not the way he would have liked. Pant has been in excellent form in the last year, as he scored impressive centuries during test matches against England & Australia. He is fearless, and hard-hitting batting style will be a great addition to the Indian batting lineup.
